Where Are the Hospitals and Shelters?

New Maps Plus

The State of 65+

Florida is home to many retirees who head south to escape the colder winter months, as well as to permanently reside. Its appeal comes with a risk- the Atlantic Hurricane season- which potentially puts them in danger of surging tides and other perils.

As such, the older population may become more reliant on temporary housing, such as a shelter, in the event of any disaster. Additionally, older populations tend to utilize medical services more heavily.

The accompanying maps show population density distribution of those 65 and over, in relation to the location of hospital and rescue shelters in the state.
